Education Supports & Commitments No Orphan without Education For $30-$50 a month, all basic needs are met for living and education of a child. Most of the time, in South Asia and Africa, orphans suffer the most because of lack of any governmental programs which may address the needs of such destitute people. The community around them supports them for their bare minimal needs – just enough for them to survive. A good number of them are found to be very intelligent but, because they lack funds, they are not given the opportunity to exhibit and develop their intelligence through a decent education. KHC has taken the responsibility to reach out to such orphan children (who have not reached the age of puberty and their father has passed away) to make them feel that there are people in the world who do love and care for them. Depending on the region, it costs only $30-$50 a month for such children to lead a normal life. Your donation for such a noble cause will be worthwhile in this world and the Hereafter. Sponsor a Student Admission fee, tuition, books, uniform, exam fees, hostel fees, and/or stipends are given to underprivileged students. Under this project, we identify deserving students from all educational levels and meet their needs partially or fully. Meeting partial needs can include providing one or more items such as text books, note books, tuition fee, exam fee, uniforms etc. KHC also provides backpacks (with stationery items/school supplies) to deserving students. Meeting their full needs includes a monthly stipend which may range from an equivalent of US$5 to US$50 in the relevant country’s local currency. This amount varies based on the quality of school, economic condition of the student’s family and local conditions. The stipend is given to students of all levels, i.e. those in primary, high school, undergraduate, graduate institutions, as well as professional colleges. Special emphasis is given to girls’ education because, as they will be mothers in future, they are the most important building blocks of our society. Support a School Schools in economically depressed areas are assisted to maintain quality education. Under this project, KHC supports schools in rural and economically depressed areas to promote education. We identify communities with a high poverty rate. Schools in these areas are then evaluated for overall needs and the selected schools are financially assisted. Examples of such assistance include covering the repair cost of a vehicle which brings handicapped children to school, payment for the gas connection of a home economics class for girls, installation of drinking water system at a school, providing lights and fans for classrooms, setting up of libraries at schools, providing them with furniture, preparing classrooms, giving computers for their IT training, and sponsoring extracurricular activities (sports, debates, tree plantations, etc.) Moreover, up to 5% deserving students from every class receive monetary or in-kind support. Information Technology and Training Deserving students are financially assisted to acquire computer literacy and software development skills. Under this project, KHC financially assists deserving students to acquire computer literacy, software development and hardware skills. Information technology has become a key component to the success of any society or country. Unfortunately, the high cost of education in certain areas prevents the poor from availing such opportunities. KHC strives to bridge this gap by providing opportunities, finances and resources to underprivileged students and schools. Self Employment and Vocational Training The underprivileged are encouraged to learn economically beneficial skills and are provided with loans for businesses such as crafting, sewing, poultry farming, etc. KHC strongly believes in making people independent. This self-employment philosophy is based on the following story from the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): A man of the Ansar came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) and begged from him. He (the Prophet) asked: Have you nothing in your house? He replied: Yes, a piece of cloth, a part of which we wear and a part of which we spread (on the ground), and a wooden bowl from which we drink water. He said: Bring them to me. He then brought these articles to him and he (the Prophet) took them in his hands and asked: Who will buy these? A man said: I shall buy them for one dirham. He said twice or thrice: Who will offer more than one dirham? A man said: I shall buy them for two dirhams. He gave these to him and took the two dirhams and, giving them to the Ansari, he said: Buy food with one of them and hand it to your family, and buy an axe and bring it to me. He then brought it to him. The Apostle of Allah (peace be upon him) fixed a handle on it with his own hands and said: Go, gather firewood and sell it, and do not let me see you for a fortnight. The man went away and gathered firewood and sold it. When he had earned ten dirhams, he came to him and bought a garment with some of them and food with the others. (Abu Dawud, Hadith 1637) The story illustrates an important distinction between simply providing relief as opposed to making someone self-sufficient. Relief is generally a short-term solution to a long-term problem; a long-term solution includes making the less fortunate self-sufficient through economic and social change. KHC aims to do this by identifying grass root organizations in various communities to collaborate with and implement such projects. Examples include providing sewing machines for a tailoring business, helping people set up retail shops, etc. Such self-reliance projects, apart from being more permanent solutions, also contribute to the integrity and dignity of people by making them feel independent and worthwhile. In the near future, KHC will provide raw materials and training to the deserving to buy back a certain percentage of the products manufactured. KHC intends to market such products through its website in future.
